FA Cup 2013 : Manchester City 0-1 Wigan
Manchester City suffered a surprising loss to minnow Wigan in the 2013 FA Cup Final.
Wigan Athletic’s FA Cup hero, Ben Watson, scored the only and winning goal just a week after returning from breaking a leg six months ago.
Watson came on as an 81st-minute substitute and 10 minutes later rose to head Shaun Maloney’s corner into the top of Joe Hart’s net.
The victory cost Man City boss, Roberto Mancini his job.
Watson said he was idistraught after the broken leg he suffered in a challenge with Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling in November – and he had feared he would miss the rest of this season.
“When you break your leg, you always wonder whether you are ever going to play again. It was a long six months but I worked hard and was around some good people. They helped get me through those six months and this is a dream come true.
“When we got to the final that was always my aim, can I get fit for the final? I did that, I worked hard. It definitely makes it sweeter. Breaking your leg to scoring the winner in an FA Cup final. It’s crazy. I hope I never come down from this high.”
